What interests you the most about your new role with Fab
Youth Philly (FYP)? I am very excited about my new role as the
Safety Captain Supervisor with Fab Youth Philly! I am most
eager and interested in collaborating with youth to make
positive and productive changes in the neighborhood/
community, no matter how big or how small these changes
What do you hope to take away from this experience? I am
hoping this experience allows me to learn because learning energizes me. For me, learning encompasses learning from the youth, learning more about the community, and learning more about myself via my new role with FYP.
What is a fun fact about yourself? My favorite Disney movie is Mulan!
Who is a person who has had a significant impact on your life? My mom has had a tremendous impact on me and my life. My mom has not only supported me through life hardships, but she’s also instilled values in me that have been critical to shaping my personal and professional development. My mom has always encouraged me to do whatever I put my mind to, while reminding of the importance of staying true to myself and standing strong in my truth.
What lesson have you learned recently that you wish you had learned sooner? A lesson that I have learned recently that I wished I had learned sooner is that it is okay to say “no”.
The Safety Captains
Meet Ms.Bry (she/her), the Safety Captain Project Assistant. She works directly with the Safety Captains and supports Ms. Kai with administrative and programmatic details.
What interests you the most about your new role with
Fab Youth Philly (FYP)? I’m thrilled to be able to work alongside a handful of Philadelphia's most brilliant youth in a concerted effort to bring about sustainable change in the 19104 zip code. I am also excited to learn how Fab Youth Philly supports efforts in the Promise Neighborhood.
What do you hope to take away from this experience?
I hope to take away new and exciting ways to engage youth and how to maintain youth voice in an organizational structure. Often times organizations that claim to be youth-centered do not value the youth voice as much as the voice of other stakeholders. As a result, we fail to realize that the voice of the youth is the voice of the community and if we are to work on behalf of the community, we must value their voice!

The thing that excites me about working with my community as a Safety Captain is making my community safe and child friendly. Mostly, I'm excited to communicate with others and get to know new people in the community. I am also looking forward to learning new things about myself as a Safety Captain and my community. In my position as a Safety Captain I want to limit teens from loitering because it makes me feel unsafe.
Alexcia "Lexie" Clay, She/Her
The thing that interests me the most about working as a Safety Captain is that I get to work with my community. Also, I get to learn new things and meet new people. In my position as a Safety Captain, I hope to change how teens don’t have positive role models so they resort to violence cause that’s the only thing they see. Also, teens don’t have unity we just fight instead of coming together.
Zahirah “Seaven” Harvey, She/Her
What excites me about being a Safety Captain is the fact that I know I'm paying the community back in a positive way. I hope that I can change the fact that there's a lot of unnecessary gun violence. Loitering is also a big thing I hope to change because it gives out a bad impression on Philadelphia visitors. Lastly, I’m working hard to reduce child abuse because its not a good thing and its just negative.
Dayshanel Hines, She/Her
Working as a Safety Captain, I'm most interested in learning what others see or wanna fix in our community. Also what kind of projects us teens will come up with. Lastly, I would like to learn from this experience. Something I hope to change is the crime in the community. Another thing I hope I can change is to get more young teens to do positive things. And hopefully spread the good energy. My sister has been most influential to me.
Kwame Lloyd, He/Him
Things that excites me to work in my community as a Safety Captain is to interview different people, to solve problems within my community, and to learn more about my community. Things I would like to change in my community as a Safety Captain is the violence rate, drug abuse from teenagers, and I would have more unity. My dad has been most influential in my life. He has taught me a lot of things in my life, he taught me to not make the same mistakes he did.
Kenzie Mitchell, She/Her
In working as a Safety Captain I'm most interested in learning how to properly research. I get the opportunity to meet people and make connections, which is exciting. Although, what excites me the most is being able to have the experience of having a job. In my position as a Safety Captain, I would like to work with youth/ other teens to make them feel more welcomed. I would also like to change how teens handle conflict.
Kania Morgan, She/Her
What I really like about being a Safety Captain is learning new things and being engaged with my community more. Being a Safety Captain is a very interesting job to me and hopefully to others as well, because of what we do together as a team. Also, I like that us teens are able to make a good change in our community. The first thing I would like to change about my community is the gun control, I would like to make it a certain age to buy and carry a gun.
Jamiel Morris, He/Him
I applied for the Safety Captain position because I found the job and Fab Youth Philly interesting the way it was told to me. My position as a Safety Captain is to help the community be safer. Also, I'm willing to help the community and make our community safer. My co-workers inspire me to do a great job and keep up the good work. As a Safety Captain, I want to learn how to sign signature’s better and other things, like creating a resume for a future job.
Jaylon Morris, He/Him
What interests me about working with my community as a Safety Captain is how you have the opportunity to learn important life lessons that can benefit your future and working skills. Another thing that interests me about working as a Safety Captain is that you and your co- workers and can work together and help each other out. Something I would change about my community is the one way streets, I’d make them 2 way streets so traffic can flow faster.
Zakira Warner, She/Her
What interests and excites me about working with my community is making it a better place. Also, as a Safety Captain I want to make this a safer environment for the younger people growing up in my community because it’s not safe in my perspective. With everything going on in Philadelphia it would be a great change. In my position as a Safety Captain I hope to change the violence.
What is a fun fact about yourself? I can sign the alphabet in American Sign Language.
